Who Created 2048?
2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli, an Italian web developer. He released it on 9 March 2014 as a free, open-source project on GitHub. At the time he was 19 years old.
How it was made
Cirulli built the game over a single weekend. He has described it as a personal experiment to see whether he could create something from scratch in very little time. He was partially inspired by the mobile game Threes! (released February 2014) and a game called 1024, though 2048 has its own distinct mechanics and feel.
The accidental viral hit
Cirulli published the code on GitHub under the MIT licence, making it freely available for anyone to use. Within a week, the game had been played millions of times. It was featured by major technology publications and spread rapidly on social media. Cirulli later noted he did not expect the game to receive this kind of attention.
What happened after
Because the game was open-source from day one, hundreds of developers created their own variants - Reskins, alternative grid sizes, and themed editions. The core tile-merging concept proved to be extraordinarily versatile. Cirulli has since worked as a software developer, and the original 2048 remains freely playable on his GitHub Pages site.
